Have A Comcast Cable Modem And Want To Have Voip?

  1. There are devices that functions as a cable modem and a wireless router; an example of which is the
Motorola SURFboard SBG900 Wireless Cable Modem Gateway Router; their average price usually range from $70 – $150
You got the right idea, if comcast is actually charging you monthly fees for the modem, might as well get your own. It is easy to set up, and like the one mentioned above, it functions as a wireless router as well; one less device in the room.
for VoIP service, I would recommend the one I use. The Iris 3000, this enables us to call our family from across states, even across countries , unlimited for one flat rate, and we even see each other because it is a phone with a built in camera. just plug it in to your internet router, flick the switch and begin to dial. no more setting up the mic and camera on the computer, not to mention waiting for it to boot, and waiting for the other person to go online. Last time I checked, this device runs for $100.00. I have had it; or at least its previous model for 3 years now and it works great.

  2. For VOIP to work, there has to be a supplier that converts it to the phone. There are several, Skype is “free” and you get what you pay for http://www.skype.com/ there are several “free” suppliers.
The next step up would be something like Magic Jack, http://www.magicjack.com/1/index.asp which is a carrier and has ok service (all depends on your connection) 19/yr isn’t too bad for phone line.
Then there are services like Vonage who offer good support and have good service. They are more expensive.
You can even subscribe to Comcasts VOIP service as well.
As far as the modem and router… you can BUY a cable modem, keep your trendnet or upgrade to a VOIP router from Linksys, Dlink, Netgear etc. BUT I would decide on the VOIP supplier first, then get what you need to work with that supplier!

  5. There are a number of Voip Providers who will allow you to pick your voip device (please see http://www.voiprater.com for a list of providers, costs and features). You will still need to have a cable modem or DSL router but you can have a wireless router that handles your voip setup as well. The combined devices are much easier to work with when setting up your phone.
