A dog that gets in to garbage is usually a bored one. Take the pup out and work her hard. You need to feed her either 1 1/2 or 2 cups. Pick one and stick to it. Is it diet food? Read the back of the bag and it will tell you how much. Don't guess when your feeding. 10lbs on a golden is like 30 on a human. It's a lot!

try scolding her when she gets into the garbage, and try not to give her as much human food.
if you're already scolding her for getting in the garbage, try moving the can to a place that she can't get to, or put a lid on it that she wouldn't be able to knock off easily.
i hope it helps :)

Garbage: Put it in a place where she can't get to it or get a trash can with a lid.
Eating from plates: If she goes around plates, say "No!" very firmly. It's okay if she has a little treat once in a while though.

you will have to be consistent in not giving her table scrapes, and securing the trash can more.
and then a little more walking every day.

She won't. If you ever watch dogs in general, they always are interested in what everyone else is eating. Even if your eating something she will refuse, she still wants it. And if she feals she can eat it she will. Regardless of her dog food. I think it's a pack mentality thing. Animals in packs tend to eat and compete to eat the same food. Even fish are the same way. They compete to eat the food first. Your dog may not compete for your food, but they are instinctively drawn do explore and possibly eat what you're eating I think.
Anyway, I think the best thing is you will have to stop the table scraps and the trash digging if you are to ever stop your dog from eating.
If you watch the Dog God, as I like to call him, or the Dog Whisperer for all the non-believers, he relates almost everything a dog does to a pack mentality or a lack of experience of a pack mentality or leadership roles within the pack. He addresses many issues with people like what your dog is having, and he usually gives advice that you have to assert yourself as the leader in the pack. And you have to establish clear lines, and you have to keep working with your dog, and you can't be inconsistent because that sends confusing messages.
For example, if there is an area you don't want your dog going into, like near the front door, he shows the owners to dominate the area. Claim the area as yours, and don't allow your dog into that area without your permission. Maybe a similar concept could be your trash can. Take it out and claim it as your own. Everytime your dog approaches the trash. Hiss and grab quicky pinch the back of his neck, not to produce pain, but as a pretend nip to show your dog that trash can is yours and he cannot touch it without your permission.
But you have to be consistent or she will eventually re dominate that trash can. Also you could just simply move it to a dog proof location. Then as for the scraps. You can claim the kitchen as your area and do not allow your dog in without permission. When you have food in your hands you can dominate that food and do not allow your dog to jump up to take it without you nipping at the back of her neck in disapproval. He will usually tell the owners not to be violent or angry, just to be calm so that your dog will see and act calmer as well. He will usually recommend that a person just stand or sit there and not pay attention to a the dog. Then when the dog starts to get in the frame of mind to do something you don't approve of then he will nip at the dog's back of the neck with his hand to simulate a nip from the pack leader.
Often he will use tools like a leash, and recommend walking your dog next to you with the leash, not in front or back, next to you, following you around, not you following them. He says that walks really help to establish a pack mentality, and you as the leader if you act as the leader and dominate the walk. He believes it helps when you try to establish yourself as leader to get your dog to behave.
Well if you have any other questions, he really does have some good tips on helping dogs and humans live together, and to teach dogs proper ways of behaving. I'd recommend you look up and watch his show sometimes and see how he instructs the owners to teach their dogs. He probably has a website as well.
Anyhow me personally, I've found a lot of his suggestions seem to make since, and I have found that even with inconsistency you can see that some of his methods work, but you'd have to be consistent for a dog to remember and act the right way habitually.
One other thing he suggests is to associate desired behaviors with positive reinforcement. And undesired actions are not allowed to get attention and discouraged by nips of disapproval. Sometimes he will use treats for dogs scared to go for a walk because he is trying to associate walking with something positive. So he may give a treat everytime it's time to walk so the dog gets happy about walking instead of scared.

The first thing is that everyone in the family has to stop giving your dog food from the table. Or if you do, just give her a small bite of vegetables. People food has more calories than dog food. If you stop giving her people food, she will probably test you by not eating her dog food. She wants to make you feel bad for her so you will give her the people food. Even if she goes a couple of days without eating, she will be just fine. When she gets hungry enough, she will eat her dog food.
With the garbage, you need to put it where she can't get to it. It's the only way to get her to stop eating from it.
With her feeding schedule, try giving her either just 1 cup twice a day, if she's used to eating twice a day, or give her 2 cups once a day. Make sure you are giving her a good quality dog food. Ask your vet for a good brand that is low in fat. Hill's is a good brand and has many choices depending on your dog's needs.
Also, if you give her treats, like dog crackers, cut then in half. They can have a high fat content. There are some good all natural treats too.
The main thing is to just cut back. Instead of giving her a whole cracker, give her half.
Another important thing is to make sure your dog gets some exercise. Take her for walks, play with her, etc.. The more active she is the more weight she will lose and it's better for her healthwise.
So, cut back on dog treats, no more people food unless it's vegetables(broccoli, carrots, green beans), cut back a little on her dog food and make sure it's good quality and make sure your dog exercises by playing with her or walking her everyday. Good luck. Hope I helped.

Fortunately for you all the training needs to be done to the humans in the house. Make sure there is no garbage accessible to the dog and put the dog outside, in a different room, crate whenever you are eating. Then cut back on the food and the treats and up the exercise. She will be a happier, healthier dog for it.
Remember that as dogs gain weight, their legs do not adjust like people's legs do, therefore, excess weight puts unnecessary strain on the dogs legs.

Pretty simple.....keep the garbage & your plates where she can't get to them to help herself. Have your whole family stand united & NOT give in to any begging. No extra handouts! She's a Golden, they are basically gluttens! LOL She may never like the idea of a diet, but unless she can feed herself, you're in charge of her food intake. She'll have to live with it.

Good luck with the garbage eating. We had to buy a metal step lid trash can to keep ours out of the trash. If you have a cabinet available, hardware stores sell a slide out rack that a trash can fits into. Designate a guard at dinnertime or crate the dog to keep her from stealing off the table. My parent's GSD had the same vice.
