Some modem cards come with audio drivers to pass through to the audio device. Others may have a connector to make the connection to the aux input on the sound card. An alternative is to use a card with its’ own microphone and line out connections and pass these to the audio connections or just connect speakers and microphone direct. If the modem has 2 sockets, normally one of them is line and the other is telephone. In this case you could connect any standard telephone to it and pick up the call on it, then disconnect the computer connection.
Years ago, there was a program called Borland SideKick that could do that. It’s long dead, and since then, I’ve never found anything quite like it.
FYI: MS-Outlook, not Outlook Express, can do it, but it isn’t cheap.
So, I’m afraid, Skype is your best VoIP option and “Skype Out” costs only $3 a month to call any land line in Canada and the USA, essentially, free long distance. And, PC to PC calls are always FREE.
