For good VoIP service, you also need a good reliable High-Speed Internet connection. Whatever Internet service you are using should have at least 250Kbps "upload" speed. Upload speed is always less than your download speed. So, if you think your download speed isn't sufficient, then your upload may not be either. VoIP can't tolerate any Internet drop-outs while talking. So, a good Internet connection is vital to good VoIP service. It doesn't matter who the VoIP provider is, if you don't have good Internet, you won't have good VoIP.
For long distance phone calling, VoIP will always save you money over landline. But, just remember, you need to have 911 backup. Any loss of AC power or Internet connection also means no VoIP service and thus no 911. So, at the very least have a cell phone for 911 backup. Or even basic landline service (no extras or long distance).
Any Internet based phone service is considered VoIP. Even Skype. Just remember that Skype does not have 911 access.
I use VoIP as my main phone calling service. But, unfortunately I also maintain "basic" landline phone only for 911 backup. The telco's have us over a barrel when it comes to 911.

plz. dont get VOIP.
you will be the victim of the same problem i sufferred.
I have tried many VOIP services, such as Vonage... But they suck. The voice quality is unclear and you have to call them everytime.
These merchants are dangerous too with their activation fees. if you decide you want to cancel it outside of 30 days, for instance, they charge you 120 buck activation and for the phone adapter
if you are desparate, just get a prepaid cell or use skype. Skype is cost-effective and has decent call quality.
