Is Ubuntu One Good Value?
Ubuntu One is a service that is offered by Canonical that allows Ubuntu users to backup their data. The concept is that you can have a way of syncing and backing up data on multiple installations of Ubuntu. Is this a good value for what you get?
Although the service is still in beta you do have two options to use this program. The first one is the free option. With this you get all the features but are limited to 2 gigabytes of space that you can sync between computers. If you are an Ubuntu user, you might as well take advantage of these 2 gigabytes of space since it’s just free online backup. Keep your most important files on this service just in case your hardware and backups die.
The other option is a $10 subscription that offers 50 gigabytes of storage. At first it was only 10 but has expanded. This should keep most computers almost completely backed up at least with essential files and media that is to be kept long term.
What is nice about this service too is that you can sync data between your computers. If you have a documents folder that is being shared, you can access it on another computer using Ubuntu. This makes it easier to work on multiple machines like a desktop and a laptop.
There are a few critiques of this service. One is that many Linux users will have more than one distribution on their various computers. Ubuntu One just works with Ubuntu. Another critique is that there are other services that can backup computer data at less cost or getting more backup space for the same cost.
The service was most likely created to give Canonical’s clients that they support a way of backing up so that they could give the larger companies and governments that use Ubuntu a way of having online backup and storage.
