What Is The Diet Of A High Milage Runner?

I am training someone to run, what is the diet of a runner?
We are putting in around 50 miles a week. I know diet is important but I don’t know how or what one should eat? I am afraid this is my weak link and I need help. Running these miles leave very little time for any thing but running, eating and sleeping. I think diet might make a difference and open up more time for other things. Where can I go to find the proper diet, amount of calories , and what foods to eat?

  1. lean protein and complex hi fiber carbs. Always eat a combination of protein and carbs following a run to aid your muscles in repair. Bananas are good to build potassium levels.
Attached is an article from Runners World on Nutrition for a runner. I hope it helpshttp://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,71…

  2. its hard to say bc everybody is a different runner and have different needs.of course, carbs are a major staple in a runners diet. but, there is a difference between good carbs and bad carbs. carbs from a abg of doritos? not so much. try whole grain pasta with tomato sauce, or alfredo. its very healthy. 2nd, FRUIT! choose ur favorites and eat as many as u can. also, water= must have. as a runner u have to be way more hydrated than anyone. it is recommended 8 glasses a day, but as a runeer, go for 10-12 a DAY. also, salad wiht light fat dressing topped with veggies and nuts works wonders on ur intestinal system. you get less cramps, less often. good luck :)

  3. Check out the forums on RunnersWorld.com. Lots of overly obsessed people there, with many opinions and some of them good.

  4. Lots of carbs. I reccommend italian food as they are packed with them. Stay away from junk food and eat healthy things like apples and celery.

  5. Pasta and a lot of it.
